A well done television adaptation of the classic story.
tinman196020035 May 2006
With a star like Alec Guiness and a screenwriter like Blanche Hanalis (The Waltons) it can't be a typical made for TV movie, and it isn't.

Director Jack Gold manages to stay away from the cloying sentimentality and excessive wordiness of the badly written novel by F H Burnett. The relationship between the young boy (Schroder) who refuses to see the selfishness in his crusty and ill-tempered grandfather (Guiness) and the lonely old man, is developed reasonably well considering the budget and time restraints.

The plot concerns a young, fatherless boy, growing up on Hester Street in the low income district of New York as he rises to wealth and social position by the whim of an old man after his three sons die. Cedric's father, the youngest son, would have been the last to inherit his father's Earldom in rural England. But his unfortunate death when Cedric was very young, means the nine year old will be the next Earl of Dorincourt. His grandfather does not approve of his son's marriage to Cedric's mother, and sends for the boy to live with him, putting the mother up in a cottage on his estate because he fears what others will say if he does not provide for her in some way.

The boy is not told of his grandfather's disaffection for his mother and gradually thru his trust and fondness for his grandfather, the boy transforms the selfish Earl into a kinder, more compassionate person. When the Earl suddenly hears of another claim to the Earldom thru the illegitimate child of his middle son, Beavis, he is shocked and outraged to discover the boy and his mother are ignorant and mercenary.

Shamed by his grandson into doing good deeds, the old Earl realizes that he is not as good a man as he should be and begins to mend his ways.

The story is well told, and from a strictly critical viewpoint may be a bit too sentimental. But compared with the actual novel this film is derived from, the story has been made vastly more enjoyable by the removal of the hundreds of unnecessary adjectives in Burnett's badly written novel. Although the story was brought forward in time a few decades, this does not lessen the impact of the plot, or decrease the enjoyment factor. THe language used by young Cedric sounds a bit stilted in the mouth of Ricky Schroder, but it is the fault of the author and not the director.

I definitely feel this film is well worth viewing, so make some popcorn, call the kids into the living room and sit back and enjoy Alec Guiness, Ricky Schroder, Eric Porter and Patrick Stewart in LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY.

Decent adaptation, worthwhile as a whole, only slightly overdone
Andreas_N26 December 2005
This adaptation of F.H. Burnett's novel features a very convincing Alec Guinness and manages to deliver the story in a very decent manner.

Ricky Schroder was at the beginning of his "child star" period. His part in the movie is a bit overdone to my mind, but this might be due to the story and is probably done deliberately.

I particularly liked the camera work. The wonderful British countryside was stunningly captured. This serves as a means of illustrating the strong contrast between the boy's urbanized life in New York and the rural dwellings in England. The audience is presented not only with picturesque images but also authentic depictions of how the poor peasants had to live in those days. This was conveyed as adequately as it was possible for a low budget production like this.

The story is interesting and nicely staged, but again, maybe a bit overdone occasionally. This makes the movie a story for children rather than adults. The changes Alec Guinness goes through could have been presented in a more credible manner - he sheds his aristocratic rigor and austerity too quickly. Ricky Schroder again seems totally unaware of his grandfather's real character and is apparently living in a kind of ideal world he creates with his childish naivety. Again - this aspect and the interaction between the characters based on this premise is slightly surreal.

The strengths of the movie are the messages and the exciting quest of Little Lord Fauntleroy to settle in to his aristocratic life - which he does in a very straightforward manner and with disarming charm.

It is basically a very solid movie with a clear message: We need to look at things unbiasedly and make us aware that we can change the world for the good of all if we just make an effort. The movie does not aim at lofty commercial objectives but stays true to the novel and thus gives a considerably decent account of how even the most old-established system can change if you admit fresh air.

Sometimes all it needs is a little fair-haired boy from Hester Street, NY.

Young American is Heir to English title.
katsonline225 September 2013
I first saw this movie many years ago and thought it was very heart warming. Although a lot of folks prefer the old Freddie Bartholomew version, I have grown very fond of this version. It has a wonderful cast and the story is told beautifully. Some folks may call it kinda' sappy...but I just LOVE this movie! It has become a Christmas tradition, in my home! Just a sweet, old fashioned, feel good movie and Ricky Schroder was SO cute! I had the VHS tape, that we would watch a few times, during the holidays. The tape finally wore out and I haven't found it on DVD. I am so glad to have found it online, so we can continue to enjoy it and make our holiday programming complete!

A Christmas Jewel
imbwoc11 June 2004
The young Rick(y) Schroder is delightful as the displaced and uprooted Little Lord Fauntleroy/Ceddie. Consider the beautiful English countryside as an important member of a stellar cast; mixed together it would be difficult to make anything but an excellent film.

That innocent young Fauntleroy melts the heart of his cantankerous grandfather played by Alec Guinness is hardly surprising. It is the typical Christmas good overcoming evil theme in the best Charles Dickens tradition. It is the path of the film, the actors and the setting that make this a jewel. The plot goes something like this: Grandfather sends for grandson.

Grandson assumes love, Grandfather is looking for an heir.

Heir becomes loved grandson.

There are subplots of grandfather not liking American mother/daughter-in-law and refusing to acknowledge her; the deplorable conditions of the estate's workers; and a contender for heir to the title and estate.

I watched this gem when it first aired and have watched my poorly transferred VHS copy yearly since (in my household it wouldn't be Christmas without it).

I long for this made-for-TV movie to be released on a remastered DVD.

A masterful adaptation of a venerable classic
Marta11 December 1999
Long ago, CBS used to make excellent adaptations of classic novels, before reality TV poisoned the sensibilities of the viewing public. Little Lord Fauntleroy is one of their best, filled with charm and energy and superior performances all around.

Filmed in England with virtually no other American in it than Ricky Schroeder, it has the proper Victorian feel to it. Ricky brings his brash but honest Yankee personality into this staid atmosphere and shakes up his grandfather's long-held prejudices against the Colonies and his own family and tenants. Schroeder was the ultimate child actor; no other I could think of would have done this role justice as he is perfect for the part. His beautiful blond hair, in the requisite pageboy required for a Victorian Lord Fauntleroy, frames his angelic face and visually sets him on a plane above every other actor, even Alec Guinness. Guinness is superb as the bitter and self-absorbed grandfather. The rest of the supporting players are excellent, especially Colin Blakely as the opinionated Mr. Hobbs, the American grocer. The English countryside and architecture also have their own role to play here. The landscape is lush and beautiful, and the enormous estate that Lord Fauntleroy will inherit is magnificent, adding much to the atmosphere.

This is a fine family film which is especially wonderful to watch at Christmas; unfortunately it hasn't been out on VHS since 1980 and hasn't been released in the US on DVD, but has been released in an Italian edition with the English soundtrack and Italian menu options. The transfer is excellent and the film is uncut. This is not hard to find but is in Region 2 format, so regular US DVD players won't play it. If you ever run across a copy of the film in any form don't hesitate to snap it up. This is one of those rare films that truly brings a novel to life, and it shouldn't be missed.

Far and away the best version ever made!
richardstrickland24 December 2003
Not only an excellent leading cast, Alec Guinness superb as the curmudgeony earl and Ricky Schroeder believably charming as the American boy thrust into the world of the English nobility, the minor characters are also exceptional: Eric Porter as the earl's steward and Patrick Stewart as the head coachman both particularly memorable. The pace of the film is also excellent, events happen and characters develop with interesting detail but without over emphasis or very drawn out scenes. Overall, in our family's top 20 or even top 10 fims. So, why on earth can't the studio issue this film on VHS or DVD! Considering the absolute rubbish that is now available even on DVD there must surely be a market for an excellent seasonal "family" film like this. We made a recording when this film was shown on TV sometime in the early 80s, since when it has been played at least twice a year for the last 20 years and both sound and vision have now deteriorated to a point where it is almost unwatchable. PLEASE! someone, pass this request on to the studio and get it issued on DVD. We know there are many families like us who would be happy to pay £15 or so for a new version to play for the next 20 years.

Alec Guinness provides a different take
HotToastyRag6 November 2020
While there's just no comparison to the magic of the original, if you don't like black and white movies, you'll do well to pick 1980's Little Lord Fauntleroy as your second choice. Ricky Shroder is just adorable, and since he's very clearly American (unlike Freddie Bartholomew) he can effectively provide the culture clash when he travels to England.

In the classic tale of a poor American boy who inherits an Earldom, Ricky and his mother, the beautiful Connie Booth, say goodbye to their friends and sail across the pond. Alec Guinness is the forbidding grandfather who refuses to speak to or see Connie, but wants to train Ricky to learn his duties. So while Connie lives in a house on the estate, Ricky lives with Alec in the main castle. He instantly takes to his grandfather, and his natural charm, innocence, and broad-mindedness makes a difference in the county. When Alec is about to evict a tenant for being late on his rent, Ricky shows more compassion by suggesting he allow the man to rest from his illness and take care of his family. Alec's performance is very good in this movie, because you're able to glean so much from his little glances. You can tell he feels old and that the new generation will run things differently, he's reliving the childhood of his deceased son, he feels the need to cater to the boy because of parenting mistakes he made in the past, and he appreciates the innocent trust and love the boy has given and doesn't want to destroy it. He turns the traditional "curmudgeon turns soft" character into something different, and it's very interesting.

Unless you're unflinchingly loyal to Freddie Bartholomew (which I totally understand), you can rent this one to see Alec Guinness's unique interpretation. Keep your eyes open, though: if you blink, you'll miss seeing Patrick Stewart for a few minutes!

Nostalgia
nexx-214 June 2005
I remember this film with great fondness. The film is full of well known British actors and American's Connie Booth and Ricky Schroder. I would dearly love to see this film again. I first saw it at the cinema, which would often show TV movies, and then it seemed to be shown on TV almost every Christmas.

The music score was particularly good too and even now I can remember the wonderful theme.

Another reason why I liked this film so much is that it was filmed locally to where I used to live. The castle scenes were filmed in and around Belvoir Castle in Lincolnshire (near Grantham), and where the Duke of Rutland resides. The shop/village scenes were filmed in the village of Exton, Rutland (near Oakham - my home town).

Hope to see a DVD copy sometime! BTW would love to know Patrick Stewart's thoughts/memories on this film!

Epic Xmas Cult
Tweetienator26 December 2021
Little Lord Fauntleroy is one of those heart warming movies that ride on the edge of cheese and kitsch but manage (luckily) to stay on the right side of the coin. On top, we get fine performances by the whole cast. Little Lord Fauntleroy: for sure a classic to watch (like some of those good old Charles Dickens movie adaptions) with all the old and little ones assembled in front of the TV set.

Excellent Movie with Excellent cast
nabor728 December 2006
I have just finished watching this movie two days in a row. A better cast could not have been found. I will not bother watching any other remakes of this as any other cast cannot stand up to this one. I have always been a fan of Alec Guiness and he plays the stoic Earl perfectly, even when Fauntleroy catches him off guard. The plot is predictable and moves swiftly, but it is the honest and precocious way Lord Fauntleroy commits the Earl's money and feelings that make this a great movie. Ceddies life on Hester street and his friends, Dick and Mr. Hobbs, was a good beginning, especially Mr. Hobb's political misgivings. I have never read the book or seen any version of this until now, so I found myself looking forward to the next unplanned method Lord Fauntleroy would thaw his Grandfather.I would recommend this to everyone as a great way to relax with the family.

Little Lord Fauntleroy follows the book perfectly
lalilover7 June 2007
I love this film and think it is criminal that it isn't out on DVD for everyone to enjoy. It is Alec Guiness at his best --as good as Star Wars--and Little Ricky Schroder as perfectly as the author wrote the book.

The mother is great and all the supporting cast too. The beauty of English countryside and of New York are wonderful. The lines are terrific. The mother's speech about American values and the lawyers prejudice of English countryside are just fantastic.

I have a worn VHS tape from the TV of it that may break any year now. so I really would like it out on DVD.

A great children's or Cmas film. I put it up to the level with "It's a Wonderful Life."!!!

Bores, snores, and Ricky
videorama-759-85939116 July 2019
You may think, I'm comin' down quite hard on this film, but I expected a much more entertaining vehicle. I expected it to be a much more playful romp, but it turned out to be more serious. The winning standout, of course was Schroder, a naturally gifted actor. If it wasn't for him in this, I wouldn't of given the film, a second glance. The other great actors do us solid, the film for me, just didn't grab me, just dulled me. The film which I don't hate, has good morals in it too, and yes, I will watch again, if only for Shroder's fantastic performance. As loving Silver Spoons, why he's not still acting, is just a waste of a super talented, now, guy. The music score (I know I go on about scores) I really liked. The story kind of feels cliche'd with some other films, this one had me thinking about King Ralph, yet that came out, over a decade from this one. The film just didn't seem alive, but be your own critic, on a film, I must say, short sheeted my expectations.

Best Made for TV Movie ever made
Gunn4 August 2008
This fantastic TV Movie made in 1979-80 still holds its place as the Best TV Movie ever made. The production values are fabulous, the cinematography awesome, the music score perfect, the casting magnificent, the pacing on track and the story emotional and very involving. Initially I video taped it, cutting out commercials, and that print was very imperfect. Years later I bought the VHS video version and the picture quality was quite poor with dirt specks and impurities and a very faded, sepia toned print. This film should be on the list for film preservation and remastering. It is a classic and I agree with those of you who say it is the best version to date, as I've seen the others and they pale in comparison. The DVD on Blu-Ray or regular would sell like hotcakes if it were properly marketed and there's a huge whole new audience out there who'd absolutely love it! There is a Website for TV Series Wanted on DVD, but sadly, no such forum for Movies Wanted on DVD. I have a List on my Website at: King Spud's Movie & TV Pages of many great films not yet released on DVD. Someone has been peeking at it as some very obscure films I listed have been produced on DVD. I just wish I could get All of those who own the rights to check out my List. Til then we can hope for the DVD or Hallmark Channel and other cable networks to run it again.

Yes you can get this on a DVD!
richardstrickland21 January 2005
Our family have loved this film for years. (see my comments posted in December 2003) But our recorded VHS version had deteriorated so much that it was no longer enjoyable to watch. I tried the "normal" means to searched for a DVD version but without success. I could only find VHS "collectable" copies at ludicrous prices (£40 to £50 plus postage, etc.) . Then I found someone in Holland offering a version on Ebay and thus discovered accident that a DVD version had been produced in Italy! - in English AND Italian. A quick web search enabled me to order from an Italian book & media Internet seller and I got an excellent copy in proper box within 3 days for a total price including delivery of under £20 ($35). Worth every penny even though it had only mono sound and presumably must have been a copy from a film distributor's version !

Remembering this movie from a fathers perspective
barpel29 November 2005
This film was released in 1980 (as stated), three years after my younger daughter was born. I taped it on TV, and she watched it avidly for many years. It became a milestone in our family life.

Within a year of first seeing it, my daughter knew every line of the script, and we would watch her watching the movie, her lips moving, speaking all the parts...(she was of course, going to marry Ricky Schroder). She still has the tape, and even at 28 years of age, still watches it from time to time. But it is sadly worn, and like another reviewer, I too long for it to be re-released on DVD. It is a beautifully made story performed equally beautifully by a superb cast.

It is an exiting story for all ages, with a feel good ending reminiscent of a kinder and more gentle age. May it last forever, and if anyone knows where it may be purchased, either new on tape, or even if it has indeed been released on DVD...please, PLEASE let me know...Enjoy! Brian Arpel

The way the mother and son should be viewed
tkreina9918 December 2005
Without a doubt the best of the Fauntleroy pictures. Gives a feeling of the mothers role and his generosity. At the end w/o a doubt grabs the viewers attention. Although earlier versions were also good this one was meant for a Christmas Movie and your heart will go out to The Mother and son. From the time he begun his journey from NYC and buying gifts for his friends. To his love for his mom and understanding how his grandfather needs him. lord Fauntleroy shows us how he truly is a leader. He gets people to love his grandfather and shows his love to the people though his understanding of their plight. His Mother is shown in the movie as truly a great lady. This version goes into detail on how she cares for the people. In the earlier releases we are or can only assume she is caring for the people. In this one we can truly see how concerned she is by her awareness of the conditions around there. She not only gives care but also gives money and goods to help the needy. Lord Fauntleroy's greatest show of caring is not by his showing of love to his grandfather but more importantly by his feelings. The seen where he gives the crippled boy a ride on his new pony has to be a classic and truly shows what a great man he will be

Exclusive Edited Version
ajaynejr27 September 2006
I saw advertised on eBay an "exclusive edited version" on VHS tape, in a yellow sleeve with a big picture of Rick Schroder on the front. It was from Feature Films for Families. Would anyone have insight as to what scenes were edited?

This is one movie I really would like to see issued on DVD, and with no editing. Right now all I have is a tape of the TV airing back in 1980. No doubt something must have been edited out of this too since almost all movies on TV are cut to run in the time allotted.

The script wording, and the way Rick Schroder articulates it, really makes the story easy to follow.

Heartwarming. Really touches you.

Warning: Spoilers
Ricky's interview with Merv Griffin on Youtube led me to this little gem of heartwarming film...and that makes his role in Little Lord Fauntleroy real.

This movie is sooo old that my friend laughed at me for watching it. I introduce it to my other friend the same way (the interview from Youtube then the film) and she believed his role to be real. This is the type of movie that I will add in my all-time favorite list (or old-time favorite maybe?? :D) because it makes you feel good.

Ceddie (Ricky Schroder) is so innocent that he assume his grandpa to be lovely and kindhearted even before meeting the Earl of Dorincourt. The truth is the earl is a strict person. And because of that, he changes everything - instead of learning on how to be an earl, he teach his grandpa on how to be a responsible earl. Along the process, Ceddie wins the heart of his grumpy grandpa and the villagers in his most adorable way.

Everybody must watch this and I assure you, you will melt and left with a very good feeling. You'll be jiggered on how this film touches you and I promise, it won't let you down.

"Not by a long shot!"

The perfect Xmas gift
dbdumonteil12 November 2008
I should hate "little lord" ,its reactionary side and its obsolete grating moral. But I have got to make amends :this is irresistible ,the perfect Xmas gift for the whole family.Tons of finer feelings ,an adorable little boy we side with all the time,a grumpy granddaddy,in the mold of Dickens' Scroodge ,wonderfully played by sir Alec Guiness. What could you ask for more?perhaps a child's soul but is there a grown up who has not kept it?If he hasn't I pity him.I also love the mother who refuses charity and who wants to earn her living .These stories of the young child who was actually a rich heir were frequent in the nineteenth century: "the little princess" or the French "Sans Famille"

Great Christmas Movie
katkats51509 June 2014
I love this movie. Well done and well acted - a wonderful family film, especially for Christmas. It is heartwarming, has beautiful scenes and is a fantastic movie for kids and adults. It holds a wonderful message, for the Christmas season and is just a joy to watch, with your family. This movie has become a favorite Christmas tradition, for my home, along with Rudolph and the Grinch. I wore my VHS tape out, to the point of it snapping apart. For some reason, it is hard to find on DVD or VHS, although it can be found...for a price. However, I found it on YouTube, for FREE, in it's entirety, with no interruptions. So, go to YouTube, download it, and ENJOY, before somebody removes it! There are a few online stores that carry it, on DVD, but it costs about $30, not including shipping. I would suggest just going to YouTube and downloading to a disc, for yourselves.

August 2011. I wrote in the above review, (written June 2007) that I hoped this movie would be, or had been released on DVD. I have since discovered that it was indeed released on DVD sometime in the 80's. It was only released as a 'give away' with a Sunday edition of one of the major London newspapers. It was never released, (to my knowledge), into the general retail area. I managed to track down two copies of the DVD in the USA, (from memory, I think it was on Amazon.com but I can't be sure). My daughter, now aged 34, who was around 7 at the time we were watching the video tape, recorded from TV, has one of the copies on DVD and I have the other.

Slapped A Big Fat Smile On My Face.
Movie-ManDan10 December 2014
Alec Guinness is one of my favourite actors. But I am still oblivious to some of his best works. Wanting to watch one of his movies on Youtube, I came across this. Not knowing anything about this, I was surprised at everything that came at me. I laughed, cried, I loved everything about this. As a made-for-TV British movie, a truly delightful and funny movie was not at all what I expected. I thought that this was going to be a serious drama with Guinness giving a strong portrayal I know and love. Instead, there's little Ricky Schroeder who finds out he is the heir of an Earl (played by Alec Guinness), who is his grandfather in England. Schroeder is our main character, a ten-year-old (roughly) blond-haired, cute kid who brightens up everybody's day. He was just what I needed to see. When he gets to England, his cuteness, kindness and honesty does not fit with everybody else. At first the Earl is annoyed, but he, along with everybody else wins the affection of of his grandson. Schroeder is so real and talented, unlike every young actor in the world today. And Guinness does give a powerful performance I was seeking. The chemistry of him starting all grouchy then becoming lovable was very nice to see. He also packed in lots of emotion into his role, which made it that much better.

This is so pleasant and delightful. It made me so happy!

A wonderfully "feel good" movie!
Martypies8 May 2012
This is one of may favorite movies. Not only is is extremely well written and acted, it is also quite lovely visually. There are some beautiful scenes depicting the English country side as well as some vision of the less fortunate majority who are not part of the aristocracy. The gradual way in which the adorable little lord wins the heart of the grumpy old Earl (played to perfection by one of the greatest actors of all time in Sir Alex Guiness), is superb and their blossoming relationship is definitely the highlight of the film. Connie Booth (from Fawlty Towers fame) is also excellent as Ceddie's kind and loving mother who always puts the well being of her son and the less fortunate tenants before her own. Star Trek fans will be surprised to see Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in one of his earliest roles ... by the way he is still bald which makes me wonder if he ever had hair! A wonderful movie, anyone who doesn't enjoy it simply doesn't have a heart beating in their chest!
