Jerry Becomes a Mom
Hitchcoc1 January 2019
This is the usual stuff with Tom and Jerry. A woodpecker chick is hatched while his mother is away and he thinks Jerry, the first creature he sees, is his mother. But his woodpecker instincts take over and he becomes incredibly destructive, turning everything into sawdust. Of course, Tom comes along and Jerry is victimized. The little guy now must spring into action. Pretty standard stuff for this series. A few little moments.

Another beautiful Tom & Jerry cartoon.
planktonrules10 August 2013
I said that this is a beautiful cartoon--and so are the Tom & Jerry cartoons of the 40s and well into the 50s. While this series lacked the originality and kookiness of some of its competitors, these shorts were the most beautifully animated shorts...period. Not surprisingly, it was also nominated for an Oscar--it was that pretty. Now it's not just the animation that is great, but the backgrounds...wow! They are just gorgeous.

"Hatch Up Your Troubles" begins with a woodpecker's egg falling out of the nest and rolling into Jerry's home. At first, Jerry hates to have the little hatchling about, as it begins destroying EVERYTHING. However, when Tom is up to no good, the little guy saves the day. Overall, a lovely cartoon that also is a lot of fun. While ALL Tom & Jerry cartoons are a bit repetitive, this one is a bit different and a joy to watch.

By the way, the Oscar winner that year was the Looney Tunes short "For Scent-imental Reasons"--starring Pepe Le Pew.

Mama.

'Hatch Up Your Troubles (1949)' is a 'Tom and Jerry' short in which the latter becomes acquainted with a newly born woodpecker. The first half of the piece is totally cat-free, focusing on the chaos caused by the wood-pecking toddler as he obliterates almost everything in Jerry's humble little mouse-hole. Once Tom comes into the fray, the short becomes a more classic cat-and-mouse caper; the bird and mouse duo must now outwit the ferocious feline that chases them. It's all good fun, with inventive sight gags throughout. It isn't massively funny but it has its moments and is generally rather charming. Of course, it's predictable. Yet, it's an enjoyable experience nevertheless. 7/10

Woodpeckers are considered to be the . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . dentists of the Animal Kingdom, HATCH UP YOUR TROUBLES reveals. In the human world, these birds are a sure-fire cure for narcolepsy if the headboard of your bed abuts a gray-painted wood-covered outer wall in the vicinity of pine, birch and cedar trees. Under these conditions, your local woodpecker guild will make sure you do not get so much as a wink of sleep after the sun comes up. This is especially wakeful when it's the middle of the summer.

A mouse named Jerry as the "Mama" to a baby woodpecker! How charming!

This Tom and Jerry, nominated for an Oscar, concerns an egg, Jerry mouse and the joys and headaches of unexpected "motherhood" for a very surprised mouse when the egg hatches into a baby woodpecker. Tom gets involved and typical sight gags (most rather painful to Tom from the looks of things) abound with great rapidity, resulting in an enjoyable time for all, except for Tom, of course. Recommended.

Jerry and the woodpecker
Horst_In_Translation22 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Hatch Up Your Troubles" is a 7-minute cartoon from 1949, so two more years until this one has its 70th anniversary. It was made by Hanna Barbera and with that in mind you perhaps guess correctly already that this is another Tom & Jerry Cartoon. World's most famous cant and mouse duo is joined by a little woodpecker here, whose egg rolls out of the nest right into Jerry's hole and that's where he hatches. As a consequence, he mistakes Jerry for his mom and while Jerry enjoys the attention early on, he quickly gets enough of the little bird. But when he sends him out and birdie runs into Tom, who is mostly more interested in having his peace and reading a book than eating the bird, Jerry and the bird reunite and work together in keeping each other safe as Tom definitely still has an interest in eating Jerry. This little movie was nominated for an Oscar, but lost to Pepe Le Pew. It is one of the more known T&J cartoons, but not one of the better I would say. The comedy here is mediocre mostly, but the film still succeeds thanks to the bird cuteness. Overall, a thumbs-up, but just a cautious recommendation this time.

The Woodpecker Adds A Lot To This Cartoon
ccthemovieman-116 November 2007
This is a very entertaining Tom and Jerry cartoon, thanks in part to a cute little woodpecker who is funny and a bit a change. Instead the whole cartoon being a chase scene, as so many T&J cartoons tend to be, it's only the last two minutes. For most of it, we see Jerry trying to deal with this little just-hatched woodpecker, who buzzes through furniture faster than a chain saw.

It all started when the bird's mother put a "Gone to lunch - back in 10 minutes" sign draped over his nest where a pink egg remains. That eggs falls out of the nest and miraculous lands on the ground safely after several soft items broke its fall. Then it rolls right into Jerry's bed! Of course, it hatches and the little guy thinks Jerry is "mama." Craziness really abounds after that incredulous premise.

Overall - very, very entertaining and highly recommended!

Another T&J adventure; another cutesy sidekick for Jerry.
BA_Harrison5 November 2011
Not the most inspired of set-ups—a newly hatched woodpecker mistakes Jerry for his mum and inevitably gets into trouble with Tom—but despite the lack of fresh ideas, there's just about enough fun to be had with the little feathered fellow to make this one worth watching. The little bird's beak goes ten to the dozen, not just making short work of anything made of wood, but also causing Tom considerable pain, rapping repeatedly on his skull, chipping a hole in his teeth, and filling him full of holes when he unwisely swallows the woodpecker whole.

The final gag—which sees the bird taking time to carefully calculate which way a telegraph pole will fall when he pecks its base, as Tom repeatedly tries to end Jerry's life with an axe—is still pretty funny despite its predictability.

Very cute and funny
TheLittleSongbird15 February 2011
This is not my favourite of the Tom and Jerry cartoons, but I am still very fond of it. The animation is very fluid and colourful, with the colours especially lovely, and the music has just the right amount of energy and quirkiness to satisfy. Hatch Up Your Troubles also has a cute story, that while it starts off slowly has a lot of funny and sweet moments, and interesting sight gags.

Tom is great here, while dastardly he is also quite likable. The baby woodpecker is just adorable, same goes for Jerry's smile. Hatch Up Your Troubles also goes along at a brisk pace and it is rounded off nicely.

All in all, if you want a cute and funny cartoon, look no further than Hatch Up Your Troubles. 9/10 Bethany Cox

I'm not too keen on this one, I'm afraid. Jerry becomes an unexpected 'mama' to a baby woodpecker after an egg falls out of a nest and rolls into his quarters beneath the house. The baby bird hatches and mistakes Jerry for it's mother. Hardly an original concept for a cartoon, even back in 1949.

As expected, the Woodpecker goes crazy, pecking stuff to into dust. When out in the open, Tom (who appears just two minutes before it's finished) takes an instant dislike when his afternoon sitting in a deckchair is interrupted and tries to kill the annoying little chick.

I'm with Tom on this one.
