His Lordship Presses On
boblipton22 February 2017
June Clyde is an American journalist in England to get a story on local farming conditions. Hugh Williams is an Earl, whom she dislikes sight unseen. To get his revenge, Williams pretends to be a small farmer who offers to put her up so she can write an informed story in this unsurprising comedy.

There are some good mild jokes and situations, mostly dealing with the problems that Williams' staff has in dealing with "Bill" rather than "His Lordship".

June Clyde was an American actress with a small but decent career in America. She spent three years in England as a lead in about fifteen quota quickies.

If you look at this in its details, it's clear that it was written by British writers; Miss Clyde's lines are not in the least bit American and the pacing is far more leisurely than the movie's American equivalents. Still, the jokes and gags are amusing in a low-key way and produce a decent time-waster.

Warning: Spoilers
If you think that this is all about a press baron then you would be wrong. In fact the title is a rather weak pun.June Clyde plays an American journalist whom Hugh Williams wants to knock down to size.Instead he falls in love with her.He poses as a simple farmer living in a rustic farmhouse whereas he is actually Lord of the Manor living in a grand house. If it sounds familiar well it is.So many films and shows of this period eg "Me and My Girl" "Damsels In Distress",seem to inhabit the same world,to much better effect. The problem with this film is that it is unoriginal, and by and large unfunny.Hugh Williams looks his usual urbane self and June Clyde plays her usual bright American.Clearly this film was made for distributors RKO Radio with the intention of getting double quota for this film as it does not have the cheap £1 per foot look of many of its predeccessors. It is not boring but very much run of the mill.
