grow to like the relationship
12 May 2024
It's 1924 Brookfield School in England. Arthur Chipping (Peter O'Toole) is a stuffy strict teacher who suspects that his students hate him. He's not wrong. While on summer vacation, he meets performer Katherine Bridges (Petula Clark).

I wasn't expecting a musical. Of course, Petula Clark gets most of the songs, but even Peter O'Toole gets to sing. He starts off not just stuffy. He's a little mean and that annoyed me. I didn't buy this pairing initially. Sure, he's Peter O'Toole, but his character is rather frustrating. I didn't realize that the two actors are the same age initially. Mostly, it's O'Toole playing so old. I do grow to really like this relationship. They are opposites and they attract. There is some drama but it needs more. It's two and a half hours. There isn't enough drama to fill so much time in the movie and in the story. Still, I really like this relationship.
