Gamyam (2008) : Brief Review -

A dramatic road movie for a change, but no change in drama. Krish Jagarlamudi's Gamyam has been in my downloads folder for a long time now, but I finally opened the folder today. I downloaded it with high expectations, but by the time I decided to watch it, the expectations went lower. I don't know why, but somehow I just knew it wouldn't be anything extraordinary. And I was right. That doesn't mean it's a bad film. It might be a new romantic adventure for Telugu audiences who have been sick of watching mindless action entertainers. For me, it was a decent to good affair, with some high moments. So, it's a regular romantic drama turned into a road film-a genre that hasn't been explored well yet, but people are crazy about it anyway. A rich boy has a bet with a friend that he will make a poor girl fall in love with him within a month. Now, that's new (how did you like the joke?). During the process, he really falls in love with her. That's another unique thing about it (cracked another joke without your permission). Since he is a rich, spoiled guy, he fails to understand the importance of life and the ways of living. On the other hand, the girl may be poor, but she lives her life the way it should be lived. She wants him to change, but he won't, and after an accident, she quits this shaky relationship. Realising his mistake, the boy is off on a road trip to find the girl and is accompanied by a small-time thief. Together, these two learn lessons about life and people. That's all. There is a slightly emotional quotient in the ending based on friendship, but that isn't anything great. Strictly good. The performances were okay, but the direction was not okay at all. The film has those typical daily soap-type scenes and dialogue that were outdated even for its time. Mostly, many so-called great Telugu films suffer from the same issue, so let's not get into that. Overall, a watchable affair, but nothing extraordinary, as hailed by some low-IQ movie buffs.
