now that it's in the public domain, there are apparently horror versions planned
10 February 2024
Okay, so everyone knows that "Steamboat Willie" is the cartoon that turned Mickey Mouse into a star, thereby turning Disney into the entertainment powerhouse that we now know (despite the poor performances of its movies last year). Well, it entered the public domain on New Year's Day this year - Wikipedia even used it as Image of the Day - so there are apparently horror versions of it planned. Mind you, it will only be this incarnation of Mickey getting turned into a horror character, as Disney still owns the rights to the character.

Anyway, the cartoon is a pre-code work, so there's some stuff that they had to remove for re-releases. A piece of trivia is that Pete - Mickey's brutal taskmaster here - is Disney's oldest character, having gotten created before Mickey. Of indeterminate species for a long time, Disney eventually defined him as a cat.

I wonder if the planned horror version will be called something like "Screamboat Killie".
