Christine Riverton Duncan (Esther Williams) is the star of a successful water show. Her best friend Ellen Hallet (Paula Raymond) is secretly in love with her playboy boss Douglas J. Morrissen, Jr. (John Lund). She would pretend to be his fiancee to drive away his unwanted clingy partners. Of all things, he cancels her company trip with him to Sun Valley for ethics and appearance. Christine decides to play matchmaker. Since Douglas only calls on Ellen for help with a clingy partner, Christine sets off to play that clingy partner. Band leader Dick Layn (Van Johnson) is also headed to Sun Valley on the same train.
I really like Ellen and her predicament. After her story is introduced in the first act, she is suddenly out of the picture. It takes forever for her to return. The movie loses steam immediately. The only thing powering it is the music and the great performers making their cameos. Otherwise, this is rather boring. The two leads are not helping. Van Johnson is being annoying and Esther Williams is not good enough as an actor. Just fast forward to the music.
