"Everybody Does It" was a frustrating film for me to watch. While it was meant to be a comedy, I found the selfish wife and her hellish mother to be completely unfunny...and even sad. And the ending...well...I really hated the way the story ended.

Leonard (Paul Douglas) is a successful contractor and has given his wife, Doris (Celeste Holm), a nice life. Still, she harbors dreams of one day becoming a professional singer...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. As for Leonard, he's a terrific husband and he encourages her and does everything humanly possible to make her concert debut a success. Talk about a supportive guy. But the concert goes poorly because Doris' voice is okay...but not professional caliber.

One of the ways Leonard tries to help Doris is trying to convince some fancy music critic to see her show. He refuses, but a famous opera star (Linda Darnell) feels sorry for Leonard and goes to see Doris' concert. While that goes poorly for Doris, she discovers by accident that Leonard has an amazing singing voice. She convinces him to put on a few recitals and he's a success.

When the wife learns that Leonard has a great voice and has been asked to sing professionally, you'd THINK she'd be happy for him or at least, wistfully happy for him. Instead, she is angry...ignoring all the money he wasted to try to make her a success. It's just petty jealousy...and ugly petty jealousy. In addition, Doris' mother laughs at Leonard and hopes he'll fail.

Well, late it the film Leonard gets to star in an opera but his stage fright (possibly made worse by his wife and mother-in-law) ruins the performance. All of Leonard's dreams of singing are now kaput...and this makes the wife and mother-in-law happy and the film ends up with Leonard and the wife reuniting.

So,...to make this wife happy, you need to fail and look like a fool. Wow. I am very much an anti-divorce sort of man, but the ending made me want to see Leonard succeed and leave Doris. But the movie ended with the narcissistic Doris happy simply because he failed. What sort of ending is this???!!! I felt cheated, as the film made you like Leonard a lot and the ending just seemed cruel.
