This is what an outright pre-code BLOCKBUSTER cinema looked like. All hail the unbeatable Raoul Walsh! The top 10 films of Raoul Walsh will tell you about entertaining mainstream cinema like nobody else. I can name those 10 films if you want, and just to extend the word limit of this brief write-up, but I suppose we all know about The Thief Of Bagdad (1924), Sadie Thompson (1928), The Big Trail (1930), The Strawberry Blonde (1941), Gentleman Jim (1942), Objective Burma (1945), They Died With Their Boots On (1941), Uncertain Glory (1944), and so many other great films by this legendary filmmaker. Me And My Gal hasn't been talked about often, and even the IMDb users ratings don't do it any justice (maybe they are unaware of it just like I was for years), but thanks to the list of "1001 movies you must watch before you die" for keeping this romantic-crime-comedy flick there so that at least people will get to know about it. I am glad that I got to know about this film. I had a wonderful time, really. This is what a blockbuster popcorn entertainer means, and it's appalling to acknowledge that it was made in the pre-code era. Walsh merged a crime thriller with a romantic comedy and added enough drama to serve us a tasty mix. What a delicious mix it is! Tracy and Bennett's flirting moments keep you grinning from the very first scene, and it doesn't stop until the end. The crime investigation is so simple yet effective, and that Kate's angle and Sarge's sign language were so impressive. 80 minutes went by like that. Steadily and fast. Raoul Walsh must have been so proud to have made this film. I am proud of him, being an admirer of his work. This is what our Bollywood sold us in the 40s and 50s and delivered so many memorable blockbusters. It's a beautiful feeling to know the source material and experience it as a movie lover. Me and My Cinema will forever cherish Me and My Gal.
