The Making of a Lady (2012 TV Movie)
8/10
Surprisingly good

I clicked on this casually because, though I had no idea what this was about, it seemed like an easy watch at just over an hour. But this story of a well-bred, intelligent orphan, Emily Fox Seton (Lydia Wilson), who is trying to make her own way in the world and is offered marriage by an older gentleman, Lord James Walderhurst (Linus Roache), is surprisingly endearingly romantic and thrilling.

The writing and direction make the most out of the story and actors - from Lord Walderhurst's aunt's attempts to find him a bride, to his sudden proposal to Emily, then them moving to his grand estate, his departure for a post in India, his cousin-heir Alec Osborn's attempt to grab the estate from Emily while he was away and finally his return.

At the end of watching, I was surprised at how much happened in this 1 hour 35 minute movie. The story flows smoothly and the suspense builds up organically.

It is a most satisfying watch.
