She's the Man (2006)

A Fun Film

This film begins with a high school student named "Viola" (Amanda Bynes) being informed that her chances of winning a college scholarship for soccer have been destroyed due to the sport being cut from the program. Still wanting to be able to demonstrate her skills to college recruiters, Viola then goes to the boys' soccer coach, but he not only dismisses her request, but also humiliates her in the process as well. Even worse, her boyfriend "Justin" (Robert Hoffman) also joins in the laughter. Infuriated by this, Viola immediately breaks up with him. Not long afterward, she learns that her twin brother "Sebastian" (James Kirk) is secretly heading out of town for two weeks and--since he is living with their dad and is set to attend a different school not far away--she decides to masquerade as a guy and try out for the boys' soccer team there instead. Obviously, this subterfuge presents enough challenges on its own, but what she doesn't count on is the fact that Sebastian's girlfriend "Monique" (Alexandra Breckenridge) is looking for Sebastian and has a habit of appearing out of nowhere at the worst possible times. Neither does Viola factor into the equation the possibility that she might fall in love with one of the soccer players named "Duke" (Channing Tatum). Or for that matter, that Duke might have a crush on the prettiest girl in school named "Olivia Lennox" (Laura Ramsey)--who quickly becomes attracted to Viola's version of Sebastian. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that I was expecting this film to be nothing more than a remake of the movie "Just One of the Guys" which came out 19 years earlier. And as such, I wasn't expecting it to be nearly as entertaining. To my delight, I turned out to be quite wrong, as I found this movie to be just as good with Amanda Bynes putting in a really good performance all along the way. That being said, I can understand it if there are some viewers who prefer "Just One of the Guys" over this as it came out first and seems more original. Be that as it may, I found this movie to be quite entertaining and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.
