The Love Parade (1929) : Brief Review -

Ernst Lubitsch tells a hilarious tale of a man's pride and a woman's limits in his first talkie, which left footprints for George Stevens' "Woman of The Year". Lubitsch does it again, this time in the talkie. Whatever he achieved with his silent films will go down in history books as learning lessons for filmmakers, and the "Lubitsch Touch" will remain unmatched forever. He still had so much to explore, so much to define, and so much to tell us in talkies, and he knew exactly what to feed in the changing phase of cinema. George Stevens' "Woman Of The Year" (1942) is one of my favourite Tracy-Hepburn rom-coms, and as you know, that pair makes it memorable. Now, today I came to know that The Love Parade did the same thing more than a decade ago, and how exquisitely and royally. Instead of a working woman, here we have a queen, while the rest of the plot remains quite close. A military attaché falls in love with the queen, and the queen decides to Marry him. He thinks that he is marrying a woman, but after all, he is marrying a woman. That makes him a puppy of a queen, a male wife of a queen, or whatever you call it. His charming life becomes remorseful, and he plans a solid revenge to awaken his man's pride. It's a fantastic script for a romantic comedy, and the screenplay is filled with some hilarious and humorous scenes. The musical numbers are royal as well as funny. Maurice Chevalier did not want to play the royal courtier, but thank God, Ernst persuaded him. And so we got a handsome, charming, delightful, and loving courtier. Jeanette MacDonald shines in her debut as a queen and as a woman. Ernst Lubitsch's rom-com is a perfect watch for men and women. He tells a nice story of a normal man becoming a queen's servant husband, then him making a royal queen become a normal wife. That exhilarant Lubitsch Touch in the climax works fine, but I, being his fan, was entitled to more.
