The film opens with a group of illegal Hispanic immigrants riding in the back seat of a truck somewhere in Mexico. They are driving towards the USA border when the truck breaks down. Then the group of people trying to cross the border from Mexico into the United States encounter a racist man , Sam (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who has taken border patrol duties into his own hands. The group of unarmed men led by Moises (Gael García Bernal) and women run through the treacherous borderland.
