1809, the Peninsula War. Sergeant Richard Sharpe saves General Sir Arthur Wellesley's life and is commissioned a Lieutenant in the 95th Rifle Regiment. He is immediately given a mission behind enemy lines. For this he is given a squad of unruly troops who happen to be the best shots in the entire army. Due to how he came to be an officer, earning their respect will be difficult.
An excellent start to the Sharpe series. Highly interesting and entertaining plot, solid performances, a great historic background and very realistic feel to the military aspects make for riveting viewing.
The plot is a bit rough around the edges on occasion but the momentum and great entertainment value help to paper over these blemishes.
