Action in Monotonous - Review of "Invisible Target"
22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Among the Hong Kong directors, one of the "King of Action" Benny Chan Muk-Sing (1961-2020), recruited Nicholas Tse Ting-Fung, Shawn Yue Man-Lok and Jaycee Chan Jo-Ming (Jackie Chan's son), and Wu Jing and Andy On who fought hard, filmed this masculine "Invisible Target" (2007), against the stage of "Wonder Women" (2007), a literary film adapted from a financial novel released at the same time, but in terms of production and attractiveness, "Invisible Target" has an absolute advantage.

In fact, "Rob-B-Hood" (2006) which Benny Chan collaborated with Jackie Chan and Louis Koo Tin-Lok, intends to write a new chapter for action comedy, but it's always difficult to get rid of Benny Chan's "true character", that kind of energetic "Hong Kong Cinema in the 1980s" feeling, "Invisible Target" even more intense, whether it's the rhythm of the film and the fighting scenes, the charm of "Hong Kong Cinema in the 1980s" is captured.

In the production special, in the narration of the director and the four actors, we can learn that Benny Chan is fascinated by this feeling, and the actors also follow him into this kind of fighting action. Among them, the most obvious one is Nicholas Tse's car crash and thrilling scene. One of the chase scenes between Nicholas Tse and Wu Jing is reminiscent of Jackie Chan's "Police Story" (1985). NicholasTse's knocked down by a bus, jumped off a building, etc., all of which have the shadow of Jackie Chan.

The interesting thing is that Jackie Chan's son Jaycee Chan played a righteous policeman in the film. In the end, because of his stupidity, he saved two friends and sacrificed himself at the same time. There are several exciting performances in the film that are really like Jackie Chan, this has also become the focus of the film's publicity. But Benny Chan didn't use Jaycee Chan to make any annotations of interpretations of Jackie Chan, which made the film simple or monotonous. If the audience only wanted to have an intensive action and sensory stimulation, the film can completely satisfy everyone, as long as the audience doesn't care about the rationality of the plot and characters.
