An elite special operations squad travels to the heart of Moldova City to battle otherworldly forces in this science fiction action flick. The film's idea is fascinating, and the CGI employed to bring the supernatural parts to life is top-notch. The well-choreographed action sequences succeed in keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
Unfortunately, Spectral's weak points are in its story and characterization. The main characters are likeable enough, but we don't learn much about what drives them or what happened in their pasts, so we can't really care what happens to them. The narrative is also not really surprising and doesn't do enough with the intriguing universe and ideas it presents.
