At a Southern California high school with a predominantly Hispanic student population, Yolanda (America Ferrera) and Daisy (Camille Guaty) convince the new biology teacher, Ms. Bartlett (Susan Egan) to become the coach of her dance team. After some initial setbacks, the girls rebel against the discipline and old-fashioned ideas of their Juilliard-trained coach. But after the girls run away and perform in an indoor competition without the coach's knowledge, the two sides must find a middle ground.
