In London, the lonely Anne (Suzanna Hamilton) finds a job in a library helping the librarian Denise (Marion Diamond). Soon she befriends the also lonely frequenter Alex (Julian Sands) and they confide to each other that both miss their former lovers. Meanwhile there are several deaths in London and the mysterious stranger Edgar (Kenneth Cranham) shows interest in Anne and promises to disclose secrets about Alex to her.
