Intriguing Joker!

Warning: Spoilers
I just had to create an account to respond:

It's surprising to see how a few reviewers fail to consider the many iterations of The Joker in the comic universe, cartoon and film.

And yet to compare this interpretation to the others would be akin to trying to find continuity in this Batman to the others: it's myopic and restrictive.

Everything about the film captured the darkest and most cynical elements of DC's best Batman (in my humble opinion.) And it isn't hindered by gadgetry, opulence or sensationalism.

So to the review of this Joker: terrific, belying a terrifying capacity. The performance is nuanced and keeps the character real as he would exist in our world. The cinematography and score enhances this scene to an eerie degree!

Does the sociopath or psychopath lack a capacity to reason? Does he lack intelligence? Is he formidable? In the scene, it culminates in affecting The Batman and I'm excited about this power and respect that each sees and holds in and for the other.

So, to the other reviewers lacking vision: Phoenix played the Joker from a mental illness perspective (and fantastic too.) Nicholson as the Clown Prince. Ledger as the maniacal mastermind. Keoghan as the keenly intuitive sociopath?!?! YES, please!

So come on now, only Nicholson carried a franchise and it was only for the novelty. I mean, please, it was directed by Tim Burton.

That wouldn't work today.... but this iteration, Koghan as THIS joker?! Absolutely thrilled!
