Superhost (2021)

Two people I don't care about, doing a vlog I don't care about, plus a cartoon villain

Wow, was I disappointed with this one. I felt like the entire movie and characterizations were ill-conceived. First turn-off: Self-centered protagonists who thinks the world is interested in their personal lives. Second turn-off: What is the audience for this vlog? Two people go around reviewing rental homes, and talk to the owners? It's mind-numbing just to read about, and our two stars make the show REAL exciting. "Superhost!" What a dumb concept. And somehow getting one crazy person on film is going to totally turn around their financial crisis. Turn-off #3: Rebecca. She is played so wacky and unrealistically, that it makes it impossible to believe her as menacing (as the music would suggest) when it came time for her to be that way. I thought I'd at least enjoy this performance. It is all wrong. I mean, in this age of OTT DC supervillains, has this aspect actually leaked into horror movies? (Yeah, a horror movie with no tension, scares, or anyone to care about).

One thing intrigued me, and it's a plotline that was never pursued. When Vera (Barbara Crampton) shows up, she says "these people aren't who they say they are." Hm, that's intriguing. Who are they, and what are they actually up to? Well, we never find out. That is, if they actually weren't who they said they were. Oh yeah, this little vlog caused her complete financial ruin. Go figure.

EDIT 03/15/22: I think I hated this movie more than a 3. I did pay good money for it, so in an attempt to reverse my losses, I sat through maybe the sorriest assortment of extras ever put to Blu-ray. The shorts are horrible (with horrible CGI), even the bloopers were lame (see an actress repeatedly ALMOST sneeze!), but what took the cake was the visual fx featurette. Literally could've been 20 seconds long, detailing the gore effects. Nope, the computer screen was altered, someone's cell phone had the time added, they edited in a different license plate. You get the idea. Oh, big surprise, the director likes to film himself talking. These were even less entertaining than this unentertaining movie.
