Scours the deepest depths of a Criminal's mind
7 March 2022
I have always been an admirer of films that care to discuss the human psyche. Anything related to Psychology intrigues me, compels me to comprehend how similar and varied all of us are at the same time. Even more so in the cases of notorious Criminals, the names who have perpetrated unspeakable crimes on innocent people. It thrills me to even contemplate the exact thoughts that go through their senses.

What do they believe? What makes them do such horrible things? How do they justify, find rationale against their heinous acts of crime? These are the questions I desperately seek the answers to. Amber Sealey's "No Man of God" is no different. With a documentary-esque style, the film tries to investigate the deepest depths of a serial killer. All this is inspired by the reminiscences of the original FBI conducted interviews and the personal experience of Agent Bill Hagmaier.

Played by none other than Elijah Wood. For some of us, he would indefinitely be carrying the tag of 'Frodo' for his entire life, perhaps to the last of his breath but now it's high time that people take notice and acknowledge the true thespian beyond those innocent blue eyes. Luke Kirby on the other hand was unprecedented, a revelation of sorts. This is my first time seeing any of his work and I'm already looking forward to his future projects.

Aside from the stellar Performances, what impressed me the most is the fact that the narrative here not only concentrates on the chats, the conversations Bill has had with Bundy in his last days but also shed some light on Hagmaier's susceptible mental state during that point in time. I have heard many people say, their job is just to interview criminals, to take notes, form a profile; how difficult it could get? Well, let me tell you, it's nothing like what you imagine it to be.

When you interview these kinds of individuals, day in day out, it takes a toll on your body and your soul. When you try to put yourself in their shoes; when you deliberately open those forbidden doors, no one had ever dared to come close to; the procedure consumes you, it eats you up. Before you even realise it, your demeanours alter, it changes the way you look at this world, the way you behave towards other people. Very few could suppress the urge, and Hagmaier being one of the most prolific criminal profilers in the world is certainly counts as one of them.

In the end, despite having some of my wishes still unfulfilled; I can safely tell, I got more than I bargained for. Even if it's no work of perfection, I was mesmerized throughout the 100 minutes or so! Here's a little suggestion, if Ted Bundy, this name doesn't ring a bell; do yourself a favour and do a quick search on the web before tuning in. Or else, it could get hard to make any sense out of it. Are you still interested? Come on, go and get your homework done then!
