It's 1973 picture day in a San Fernando Valley high school. Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) is a 15 year old student and part time actor. He's a hustler and a handful. He's taken with Alana Kane (Alana Haim) who is working a tiresome job for the photographer. He starts pursuing her despite their decade age difference.
Paul Thomas Anderson is a great and interesting filmmaker. There is something a little uncomfortable about the subject matter which keeps it from being fully enjoyable and comedic. Valentine is a bit much and I feel the same as Alana. There is also a couple of adult characters who are taking quirky way too far. Despite a few bumps in the road, it's a fascinating ride done with loving nostalgia and visual skills. The young performers are very good. Alana Haim is a great newcomer. PTA has received three more Oscar nominations but the odds are against him getting his first win. We'll see.
