The documentary begins with a 1776 quote from Thomas Paine:

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

Then the documentary goes right into testimony from a Vietnam Vet about the horrible things he'd seen in Vietnam being done in America's name, or in the name of freedom, or whatever brand the U. S. military gave to the purpose of that war.

If you are ready to hear these men speak out then be prepared to flinch, wince, and perhaps even cry about what happened to the Vietnamese in Vietnam--mostly for being Vietnamese in Vietnam. It is a panel of Vietnam Vets Against the War (VVAW) who are boldly speaking about things they'd seen or even actively participated in. One soldier stated it best when he said, "At one time I was an animal and now I have to go back to being civil again." It's heart wrenching, it's sobering, and it's history. American history.
