Fairytale

Over the first 10 or 15 minutes of this nice romantic commedy I thought that what I was watching was a kind of 'Roman Holiday' (William Wyler 1953) avant la lettre, but that is really not the case. The starting point is similar (princess goes on a spree and falls in love with a commoner) but the storyline differs substantially, and not only because the setting is New York and Washington. 'Roman Holiday' has of course become a classic, while 'Princess O'Rourke' has not. As acting or direction (which are both good) cannot be responsible for this relative lack of appreciation I suspect it must have got something to do with the plot - but I want to avoid spoilers, so I am not going to tell. Anyway, I for one liked the film very much, including its ending and including the role played by FDR's little dog. It is a pitty the picture is not better known.
