Politicians sold Vietnam as a war against the spread of the evils of communism. In reality, this film illustrates that on the ground it was a war against the people of Vietnam. It also is another example of how the aims of the American government and military so often run counter to the interests of the local populace. The cost, tens of thousands of American deaths and millions of SE Asian lives lost, which did very little to stop one party communism and only delayed the eventual economic boom in Vietnam.
