Stillwater (2021)
Oklahoma man caught between a rock and a hard place.

Matt Damon is Bill, a laborer in Oklahoma, often a roughneck when there is work. His daughter went off to college in Marseilles France, he is uncertain why, but we later find out it is because she just wanted to get far away. Dad she considers to be a screw-up, and it looks like she might be following in his footsteps.

The daughter is in a Marseilles jail, five years now, has four more to go, convicted of killing her roommate, who was also her lover. But it seems the other girl might not have been faithful, the name of a guy Akim comes up, he had told someone he killed a girl. The daughter tells dad she is innocent and he believes her.

Dad wants to prove her innocence and get her out of jail. Unable to afford to pay professional investigators he decides to investigate it all himself. He gets work in France, he meets a nice lady, and pays rent to stay with her and her 9-yr-old daughter. Eventually the three of them start to resemble a family.

Bill isn't certain his daughter is innocent, but he hopes she is. He is not hesitant to break the law himself if it will lead to her conviction being overturned. He is her dad, his devotion is to her.

Overall a good movie and Damon is good in a role unlike him, an Oklahoma Redneck. My wife and I watched it on DVD from our public library.
