And was lost for all of us. Forever.

What a painful film to watch because it is the John Garfield's last stand, the last film of this awesome, tremendous actor, so gifted and powerful, this authentic fighter facing evil forces that killed him. A fight lost in advance. Garfield is terrific in this gloomy film but so splendidly made by a director, also victim of tha Maccarthysm madness and who finished his life and career in France. It is more a drama than a crime film and if you are in love with this actor, you have to be warned before watching it. Shelley Winters is outstanding too as the female character, hesitating between her love for this lonesome man, not so bad inside but cop killer, and her family to protect against him. The more I watch movies with Garfield, the more I realize how much we miss him, all of us. He was Alain Delon's favourite actor. Please don't miss this film.
