The War Below (2021)
4/10
Decent production values but tone feels off

I feel a great opportunity was missed here to really capture the raw terror and emotion of this story, but unfortunately it ended up missing the mark.

The biggest thing I noticed was that the demeanor of the miners when they reached the frontline seemed off. You would expect civilian contractors to be truly terrified and horrified by what they have walked into, but they quickly seemed more irritated and annoyed by the horrors of trench warfare, which I found odd. A lot of effort was clearly put into trying to re-create a realistic set, but the character development and the psychological trauma of being in a war zone was poorly handled.

I also didn't get the big emphasis on having "experienced miners" carry out the tunneling operation as if they were bringing in some kind of specialized techniques or equipment, when all they seemed to be using were shovels and sacks. In reality, I'm sure this was not the case during the actual events, but this was really not portrayed well in the movie.
