Up to Snuff (2018)

A refreshingly uplifting biopic

What a joyful celebration of a musician's life. It seems rare to see a documentary about someone beloved who is still living. I had never heard of Snuffy before watching this film, but I'm so glad I did. It stands out among musician biopics. Most are about very damaged folks overcoming (or not) their demons. Snuffy dealt with his alcoholism fairly early and it doesn't rule his life. It was refreshing to see a mostly joyful story for a change. I particularly loved the archival footage of Snuffy with his band Stray Dog. And the clip of his solo with Chaka Khan? Incredible. Also incredibly inspiring how he made the jump from playing to composing for television. The film is beautifully shot and uplifting.
