"Sound of Metal" focuses on a drummer Ruben, whose entire existence revolves around music, and by going deaf his losing that which defines his life. The movie focuses on the destructive nature and high cost of self-deception in the face of hard truths. Riz Ahmed in the leading role is wonderful, with his struggle to find meaning and peace in chaos. The most unique about this is the sound direction. It goes from pounding in-your-face metal music through the muffled reality as Ruben loses his hearing to the sense of peace in the moments of silence. It sounds best when it is quiet, but shines bright from start to finish.
