What is the obsession with human trafficking??
25 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is the strangest movie and rabbit hole I've fallen down in a while. Do people realize that sexual crimes are much much more likely to be committed by someone the victim knows? And that it's the guy next door who goes to sleep afterwords and no one ever reports it, not some weird underground kidnapping ring. While the situation in this movie is I suppose possible, it is extremely unlikely. The end of the movie preaches that people need to pay attention to the horrors of child trafficking. If a woman like amber was kidnapped, it would be a front page story. The media loves White girls in upper-class families that are kidnapped. I can think of five famous ones off the top of my head. There's no lack of people caring about these girls. We don't need to spread the word about these girls because this is incredibly publicized and well documented - and happen close to never. Now the story of the other slaves? It is extremely rare for parents to sell their children (although mine may have wanted to.. ha ha) but there are children in extreme poverty in the US who may have had this happen. But these people are also EXTREMLY RARE. But at least a story about these women would have been interesting and not just an after school special. If we want to talk about a cause, let's talk about sexual assault in the us as a whole. There's no conspiracy hiding sexual trafficking, but it's rare and we are ignoring the real issue of sexual assault.

Anyway, my gripes with the strange social issues aside, this movie is pretty bad. The acting is terrible. The characters act like aliens. One girl is so drunk she forgets what the word "drunk" is. No one does this! Amber is held hostage in a shady motel forced to have sexual with multiple men a day even though she's front page news around the country. These men are also shown spending very small amountS to do this. If a front page news girl is being sold for such small amounts when these men could easily turn him him for much higher reward money, this must be the worst pimp of all time. Also, the weird prayer circle of the moms instead of canvassing for this girl was also wild. In the end, this gets a two because there was a plot and I finished it. Amber a shell of herself after escaping was actually a pretty realistic reaction to trauma and decent acting. I guess I was entertained, and if you have a strong obsession with child trafficking, I guess this movie is for you.
