Western (2017)

A slow delight
16 December 2020
My second Bulgarian movie, and 4th from that region, was oxymoronically entitled 'Western'.

There wasn't a big plot and no conclusions. I fell into its flow. It calmed my restlessness.

German contractors get a job to build a road in the wild countryside of Bulgaria. Unable to communicate, there's animosity between the crew and nearby villagers. However, one worker makes friends with a horse which leads to him making friends with some people in the town.

Despite them rarely being able to communicate, the movie was a lesson in communication.

Wonderful landscapes showed me that there's more to the country than I realised. Additionally, Bulgarians are a melting pot, more a mixture of Turks and Grecians than anything Western European.
