Going into it, this movie felt like it was made as a quick marketing stunt. Vaughn Monroe was an extremely popular singer at the time, and had basically no experience acting. Turns out he's a decent actor, but was definitely outdone by his co-stars Ward Bond, Walter Brennan, and Ella Raines.
Brennan, the town doctor and preacher, takes a turn at a more reserved role than he is famous for, and he does a fantastic job. Bond, the Sheriff trying to catch Monroe, may be the best part of the movie. Raines runs a local saloon and is a pretty strong and independent female character, especially for early 50's westerns.
While the plot is hardly original, Monroe plays a thief with a heart of gold who is redeemed by his co-stars, the actors make it an interesting watch. If I was a teacher, this movie would get a grade of 80%. However if you aren't already into westerns, this might not be as enjoyable.
