Annie Marchand (Kate Beckinsale) works at a Chinese restaurant with high school student Arthur Parkinson (Michael Angarano) for whom she used to babysit. She has a young daughter with husband Glenn (Sam Rockwell). They're separated but he's trying to prove that he's getting his life together. There is a devastating incident and everybody suffers.
This movie kept reminding me of the song "Everybody hurts". It's a movie of pain and suffering with small slivers of hope. It has a great performance from Sam Rockwell. His descend is harrowing. The only issue is that the mystery of the gunshot isn't as mysterious as it should be. It's basically either him or her situation. The opening gunshot is probably not necessary and may have caused expectations for the movie. This is a dark character study and the second half descend sadly feels inevitable.
