The Sinner (2017–2021)
3/10
It is a show about VERY stupid people

I hate-watched it because I am stupid that way. Well I don't hate all of it. It is interestingly structured. The writers kind of cheat you in the first two seasons to throw you off track, like the parents lying about their younger daughter's death for no reason, and the car found in the lake in the second season etc. Both first seasons also alluded to a grand scheme of things which turned out to be false, and motivations turned out to be simple idiocy, something I actually appreciated.

However, none of it is a problem. The problem is that the perpetrators in every single season are VERY stupid people to begin with. The woman who made an unending series of stupid mistakes one after the other until she practically got her sister killed in an environment, which she could have very easily predicted wasn't safe for her sister given her condition. In the second season, a stupid kid who thinks people can be reseted, with the whole story adding absolutely nothing to the final defense, which could have been easily given on the first day. But there was nothing like the offense they committed with the third season. Like a bad read of Nietzsche's earliest work lead to all of that? There wasn't a single legit philosophy professor in their lives who could take 10-15 minutes to put Nick's ideas and antics in place, and on top of it he stayed in that teen phase for 18 years? And the underling who was way more STUPID than the original jackass suddenly got his psychopath turned on after spending 18 years of perfectly normal life?

In the end the real villain against intelligence was Detective Ambrose. Like he is the most transparent detective you can hope for if you have committed a heinous crime in cold blood. He will be in immense guilt for prosecuting you. He will always have one distinct tragedy ready in his personal life to relate to you and will get emotionally invested in you to a degree even your parents or partners could never possibly imagine. He will, however, care very little and will be completely professional when it will come to handling your unlucky victims. Them poor souls, he rarely loses his sleep over.
