Playing Cards (2017)
Chicken nugget budget, Rack of Lamb taste
12 March 2020
It's easy to bypass this shoestring budget offering, which at first glance may appear as a continuous rough edge. Poor lighting, uneven acting and a grassroots quality permeate the production. In this case however, the whole is much greater than the sums that make it. The lighting adds to the oppressive atmosphere, the direction maintains an ever tightening sense of anxiety and it's run time ensures it does not overstay it's welcome. If Mr. Robertson set out to make a unique psycho thriller, then he's played his cards deftly indeed. Deal me in!
