A coming of age heartwarming tale
31 January 2020
Jawaani Jaaneman - Jazz (Saif Ali Khan) is a property broker by the daytime in partnership with his brother and spends his evenings at a club that belongs to his friend Rocky (Chunky Pandey). Here the middle aged Jazz does everything to relive his youth with girls half his age, with absolutely no strings attached. He is allergic to commitments and shuns the very thought of settling down as a family man. One such evening, his past comes calling at his door, and in steps Tia (Alaya Furniturewala), claiming that she may be his daughter from a long forgotten relationship and his world comes crashing down.

What follows is a roller coaster ride for the boy-man Jazz who starts with disbelief and follows up with denial and anger. There's further surprise in store as he soon realizes that Tia is pregnant with a baby from her ex-boyfriend. Jawaani Jaaneman is a heartwarming tale of coming of age for Jazz where he gradually accepts his responsibilities and grows the protective paternal instincts whilst learning to live up to values and commitments.

In a tailor made role, Saif simply breezes through with excellence. His transformation from a casanova to a loving father is beautifully nuanced - he is indeed a pleasure to watch. Alaya makes a dream debut - she is fresh, sprightly, expressive and does justice to her role. The movie is about the development of the bond between an estranged father and daughter, and director Nitin Kakkar keeps matters focused. Kubra Sait, Kumud Mishra and Farida Jalal are superb support. I however found Tabu's role underdeveloped and irritating, quite extraneous to the proceedings, almost avoidable. Music by Ketan Sodha is fantastic - "Baabula" will melt your heart. The dialogue written by Abbas Dalal is a star of the show too!

Much recommended - go for this 130 minute drama, a ride you won't regret!
