The Power of the Ivy
4 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Danielle "Daisy" Brooks is an Iowa farm girl and orphan, who sells her family land plot to attend prestigious Beckshire College. She leaves behind her boyfriend Will and a possible life with him on a ranch.

For the student with a 4.00 grade point average, the future beckons as a political science major with possibility of winning the coveted PEIP (Political Economic Internship Program) award, which will mean an internship in Washington, D.C. and the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Monica Lewinsky.

But in starting out her academic career at Beckshire, Daisy makes two major mistakes. First, she has a one-nighter with the smooth-talking Blake Graves, the son of poly sci professor Andrew Graves and his wife Elizabeth, who is the new Dean of the College. The liaison with Blake will have fateful consequences after Blake appears to dump Daisy and their night together has been recorded on a hidden camera.

Daisy's second major mistake is to take vows in the secret society of women known as the Ivy. Despite warnings from her kind roommate Magenta Hart,, Daisy takes her vow, swearing the oath "concordia res parvae crescent" (working together and accomplishing more). In so doing, Daisy will fall under the influence of its powerful president Azalea. What what is it exactly that she will "accomplish" at Beckshire?

One of the themes of the film is the weakness of the flesh. This is apparent in Daisy's inability to say "no" to Blake, as well as both Blake and his father's inability to say "no" to Azalea. These actions all have consequences when Azalea seeks to use her "influence" to have her low grades raised. When the password into the system is denied, Azalea will go on a rampage.

Another theme is the importance of thinking for oneself. Daisy is a straight-A student forced to take out student loans and work in a campus job to pay for her education. Yet, she whiles away her life with a commitment to a nefarious campus society. Because she learns virtually nothing in the film either about government or personal responsibility, she is a most unsympathetic character in a film that is replete with others of her ilk. One has to feel sorry for poor Will and what his future holds in store for him with his girlfriend on the Daisy Ranch in Iowa.
