To preserve the Hamre family, Bente follows his dying father's will and marries the brutal landlord son Gorm. He chases the farm's young girls and is subject to the bad influence of the evil and intriguing shooter Groves. The unhappy marriage turns into a veritable power struggle between Bente and Gorm. In parallel is followed by Bente's younger sister Grethe, who appears to be happily married to grocery son Martin. This one is, however, unnaturally strongly linked to his mother, and his family spends off Grethe's legacy.
