It begins when the security bureau chief asks for help. His friend agrees to lead the caravan but they are ambushed by thieves. ("Ambush" = The title - Get it?) The constable son played by Chiu Hung is blamed/framed and escapes custody. This will not be the last time he is framed in this movie.
Chiu Hung is a non-martial arts dramatic actor who began martial arts roles starting with 1966 "Come Drink With Me". It would seem he has been practicing martial arts diligently on the side as his swordplay in this movie is quite good. (When actually fighting instead of the stunt double.) Many of his fight sequences have ten or more moves without a cut. He also displays good power and focus. In the final scene as a dramatic actor he delivers the worst marriage proposal in movie history with the line "Cousin, would you like to live with me in recluse?" What lady could refuse that offer? (Last sentence written in "sarcasm font".) I have watched this movie at least two if not three times over the past ten years or so and still I cannot spot Mars and Jackie Chan who both have credits as extras. The final fight was at the Shaw Brothers windmill set. This memorable set was previously used for the final fight in 1971 "Duel for Gold". In this movie the windmill assisted in the fight. Here's another better than average Shaw Brothers movie that I recommend for all fans of the genre.
