NYC Girl in Wisconsin
2 March 2019
Olivia Riley is an entertainer at the Sirocco Club in NYC. Her boyfriend is Henry Linden (Melvyn Douglas), a millionaire farmer out of Wisconsin. Henry is smitten with Olivia and wants to marry her. Olivia is reluctant to marry Henry because she is afraid her NYC sensibilities will not mesh well with his family's conservative Wisconsin values.

Henry's brother David (Robert Young) is dispatched to NYC to bring him home. He shows up at a cocktail party in a fabulous art deco suite and meets Olivia face-to-face where her refers to her friends as "witty, gay, and brittle." He also infers that Olivia shouldn't marry Henry because the family is worried that she'd cheat on him ... so Olivia slaps him!

Olivia and Henry marry anyway, and her introduction to the family back in Wisconsin is less than warm and welcoming ... except for David's mousy little wife Judy (Margaret Sullivan). They hit it off. Bible-quoting spinster Hannah Linden (Fay Bainter) is a complete *****.

The rest of the film is about Olivia finding her place in the family and her potentially ruinous faux-romance with Henry's brother David.

Random Thoughts:

I found it kind of odd that Henry kisses his sister Hannah on the lips when they greet each other, and Judy kisses her brother-in-law Henry on the lips when they part. Is that normal in Wisconsin?

When discussing the house Olivia and Henry are building, Olivia tells David that "Henry is going to compromise and do it my way." I love that line!

These women talk about how hot it is but they all waft around in these big dresses with so much fabric! What did y'all expect wearing all that crap?

Hattie McDaniel plays Olivia's maid, Belvedere!
