One of the many reminders that animation doesn't have to be "cute" is Claude Barras's Academy Award-nominated "Ma vie de Courgette" ("My Life as a Zucchini" in English). The subject is a boy sent to an orphanage after his mother dies. After some initial trouble adjusting, he befriends a girl, and then starts developing good relations with the other children. But there are more challenges to arise.
The stop-motion animation allows for all sorts of perceptive facial expressions, especially as we learn the backgrounds of the children. This is the sort of movie of which I would like to see more. Certainly more interesting than many of the animated features that we see.
