Time to Change the Game
24 March 2017
At this point, I think the problem with Legends is that I've lost an overall interest in this year's story. It had a promising start, and took the show in new and refreshing directions, but since midseason it has failed to recapture my interest. Reducing the plot to the Spear of Destiny, which is nothing more than an enhanced MacGuffin.

This week the team finally compiled the spear together, stealing the last part from Eobard, who happened to be hiding with the Legion of Doom in the "Vanishing Point". So, in the same vein that the George Lucas episode was clearly an homage to Star Wars, this episode was a blatant homage to the first Lord of the Rings film. In this regard, I enjoyed the similarities between those two. Particularly, seeing Mick turn to the dark side and help the Legion. He could be pulling one over on the team again, but it sure doesn't seem like it. And I'm fine with that. As long as he'll still have his ridiculously stupid one- liners.

I like that this show is doing more with the settings, especially considering last season was stuck in a 20th century setting every episode, but I don't feel like the characters are evolving to anywhere particularly interesting. Did we really need an episode where they searched for a guy buried with Jesus' blood? Wait, was that actually the plot of this episode?

I guess my biggest frustration comes from the lack of development overall. Take Sara for example, she is the captain of the Waverider and leader of the Legends. But is she really in a more interesting spot than she was on Arrow for a season and a half? I just feel like the show hasn't taken the characters to a state where they evolve into different and possibly more interesting humans. Instead, they choose to make the same old mistakes and misfires regarding time travel and changing their destinies. For now, this show is stuck in mediocrity. It's undeniably dumb fun, but I find myself questioning why I'm watching a show that doesn't add anything new to sci-fi or comic- book television. It's all about execution, and the show isn't necessarily executing right now.

+Fun take on Tolkien

-But there's nothing more under the surface

-Same old mistakes
