An underdog story .....
5 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film is like a louder version of Maheshinte Prathikaaram. The two films are quite similar with protagonists who overcome the disappointments in their life. There is even a nod to Maheshinte Prathikaram in this film. The plot was believable. The performances were over the top. I liked the setting - the small village of Kattapana.

Dharmajjan is particularly good as the hard drinking best friend who sends lewd messages to women(!). Vishnu Unnikrishnan does a decent job as the dark skinned underdog. Lijo Mol Jose is terrific as the girl who covets Vishnu's character. Even N.S.Madhavan praised her performance. Prayaga Martin is easy on the eyes. The relationship between Vishnu and his father (played by Siddique) was interesting. It was probably the most interesting aspect of the film. But the relationship's dynamics and resolutions are to a large extent sacrificed for the comedic scenes and loud songs. Siddique was damn good as the father.

One does feel like this is a story that has been told many times in Malayalam cinema. But Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan has a lot of heart. The film probably does not deserve a 6. It is more of a 5.5.
