Why did Prithiviraj Sukumaran get involved in this sorry excuse of a movie? (Spoilers)
17 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps because Jeethu Joseph who gave us one of the best thriller's in malayalam movie history with Drishyam(2013) was at it's helm? Still, a shocker of a movie from an actor who is infamous in the industry for insisting on a fully finished script before signing on. Was it a loss in translation, I wonder because this movie was just atrocious and a pain to sit through. One of the worst movies I've seen from Prithviraj in a long while.

The characters were poorly written. The dialogues were below par, especially the English ones. Seriously, when you make a movie spending crores of rupees you should try finding a screenwriter with a good command over the language and ensure that the actors get the diction correct unless bad diction is part of a character. Neither the villain nor the two guys who played his son's (who were hamming for the most part) came off as even remotely menacing or posing a threat to our hero. Pashupathi was wasted and was that Samuthirakani? The way Jeethu writes police character's is criminal. There was not one cop in this movie who had any clue as to what was happening until it was too late, especially when neither the hero nor the villain were doing anything remotely smart in my opinion. The hero in Drishyam who used his street smarts and the knowledge he accumulated over the years from the umpteen number of movies he's seen to outsmart the cops felt more realistic than the IITian cum controlled explosive specialist protagonist eliminating his targets using explosive devices in this movie.

The background score was underwhelming. Unnecessarily loud sometimes (Conversation between Captain, Marques and his son's inside their car) and goes mute at other times (When Marques gets emotional with Captain over his son's murder)and fails to accentuate the feel of the film at times and working against it at others.

The viewers are well aware of the motive's behind the hero's journey for revenge and they also know everything there is about the villains, well before the movie hit's it's half time mark. The only thing that remained to keep the proceedings exciting was the journey itself. The movie fails in this regard mostly dues to the things that I've mentioned above. In conclusion this film fails as a mystery, crime, thriller or drama.

I am glad that I waited to watch this on DVD.
