Review of Debug

Debug (2014)
7/10
Film that has moments of real excellence

Warning: Spoilers
Let's get the obvious out of the way first.................yes, the basic premise of the film has been done before, whether 2001, Collossus or even Tron and Lawnmower Man.

That is, it's Artificial Intelligence pitted against humans.

But given that very few films (if any) can claim to be wholly original these days, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

What Debug clearly shows, is that David Hewlett is both a good writer and director - especially when considering the budget restraints.

The casting is solid, but with standout performances from both Jeananne Goossen and Jason Momoa.

Goossen kicks ass, and can only hope she plays similar roles in future..............and Momoa plays the AI villain perfectly - a real change for him, as the role isn't reliant on size or muscle.

The film won't be for everyone. Those who'd rather see a huge budget CGI fest will probably scoff, or those who'll pick holes in any film they watch.

But with Debug, David Hewlett shows some original spin on tried and tested ideas, and makes them his own.

Would be good if a film studio gave him a healthy budget, and he'd probably create a real classic.
