Sorry But It's Miscast
4 April 2014
According to the shortoftheweek website this was inspired by the Young Vics Theatre production of the Edward Bond play Bingo this reviewer can't help thinking he might have had to watch the original source material in order to understand EPITHET . Right away this short film has a ready made marketing tool in the shape of Patrick Stewart . I'll stick my hand up right away and say I've absolutely no interest in STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION but do understand the popularity of Stewart . He's old school thespian talent happy to tread the boards bringing Shakespeare to vivid life but at the same time never gives the impression he's slumming it when he appears in other mediums which he is almost certainly doing for the money . He's also very subtle and maybe the problem is that he's too subtle here ?

Apparently Stewart is playing " a sleazy lothario " it says here . I never got that impression . Yeah okay the dialogue suggests that his character John is very much a dirty old man who is trying to impress a young woman certainly young enough to be his daughter but my reaction wasn't really one of disgust which I guess is the reaction the audience are supposed to be feeling towards him therefore his comeuppance is negated . . I'm guessing some actors have a natural good guy vibe to him and just can't do sleazy creep and Patrick Stewart falls in to this category
