Review of Wowowee

Wowowee (2005– )

Great show, but over the years, the quality has decreased.

This show is truly phenomenal, but over the years it has changed greatly, and not for good.

Currently, the co-hosts are Pokwang, Mariel Rodriguez, RR Enriquez, and Valerie Concepcion. Out of all the co-hosts its of course no question that Mariel is a natural (in the Philippines, a good host is what is needed to bring a show) and her personality lights up any room, but sometimes, I have to question what even the main host, Willie "Papi" Revillame is doing nowadays. Sure, his cracks are funny and insulting at the same time that you forget the latter, but nowadays its just to a point where its almost not funny.

I have been an avid viewer of the show since about 2006, and I have always loved it - still do. The thing is, I just don't feel the "closeness" that they used to have anymore. Back then, on the opening for the show, Janelle and Mariel - and even Roxanne at a point, would be singing together with Willie and they'd have some sort of group hug. It was refreshing to see that these people do care for each other.

However, nowadays, it seems like they are just in the show to get it over with. You barely understand the hosts because they talk too fast, and they rush all the games because there's no time. And that "closeness" that the show once embraced isn't felt anymore. Pokwang is a great co-host because she can bring the comedic material in; Mariel, again, is one of the best hosts in television at the moment, and while she has grown out of her 'ditzy' stage, she can also make fun of herself without shame; RR has her hilarious moments; and Valerie has to be at the bottom of my list. I truly do not understand how she won a 'best' TV Host Award when people (at least, us who have TFC) even point out to me that she giggles through everything even when doing her hosting duties. She's basically giggling her way through every prompt read and it used to be cute but now its not. That is not a definition of a good host.

To end the note of the hosts, the show is a breakthrough in many ways. The Filipino people get to hear stories that will make them cry, or laugh. They may have had many accusations and "scandals", but giving money to the poor and needy is enough for people like me to at least give the show a bit more respect and decency.
