Nice, romantic film
17 October 2008
I don't get the bashing this movie receives from many reviewers. These romantic little films aren't supposed to be accurate depictions of reality. Instead they're aimed at touching the heartstrings of people and they either leave the theater deliriously happy or still drying tears from their eyes. This movie did one of those things and I won't mention which one.

Those who loved "The Notebook" were probably a little more enthusiastic about seeing this film, as that film was a particular standout where romantic films are concerned. "Nights in Rodanthe" isn't as magical but it's a solid film nonetheless. And it's not as if "The Notebook" didn't cut a few corners here and there, it was the overall quality that made the film an instant classic. Here the romantic relationship by Lane and Gere doesn't have a long buildup but the characters have registered well, are thoroughly likable and believable and you really start rooting for them.

The film is also flawlessly made, with beautiful scenery and cinematography; that guest house looks like it's torn from a beautiful painting and all the surroundings look like a place from a perfect dream. This is all somewhat sugarcoated but it's very, very nice.

The re-teaming of Gere and Lane is just perfect. Gere can sleepwalk through these romantic roles and here he's extremely likable as the tortured doctor in dire need of a dose of happiness. But Lane is just outstanding here, showing once again what a quality actress she is. And she's never looked more gorgeous than here.

So just take a break from the harsh realities of the cold world and watch this tearjerker about second chances at love with an open mind. I wasn't disappointed.
