Review of Sandstone

Sandstone (1975)

What had we hoped to achieve through Sandstone?
27 August 2008
As the public relations director from 1969 through 1976 and half of the "spokescouple" (with my wife Maggie) we worked to acquaint the world with the Sandstone Experience. In part our brochure read:

"Sandstone Retreat is nestled near the top of a secluded coastal canyon in Southern California's Malibu Mountains. The elegance of Sandstone is enhanced by a spectacular view of the Pacific Coast and distant Catalina Island. The setting offers a relief from city tensions to the relaxing serenity of natural privacy, fresh air and a variety of activities.

The wearing of clothing at Sandstone is always optional. Open expressions of affection and sensuality are also always appropriate when mutual. While neither nudity or sexual sharing are ever required, Sandstone does offer a serene setting where the real worth and dignity of human sexuality may be experienced."

This documentary effort captures only a 2-week snapshot within the seven years that Sandstone was in existence. In some ways it is representative of the facts and in others not.

Unfortunately, the experience filmed was skewed by the intrusive presence of the filming couple and their resident crew of 3 unaccompanied males, plus some odd uninvited drop-ins, such as my aunt and uncle, the pervert with the sex van and a conflict between a newly arrived couple.

In our presentation, we often compared the psychological benefits of well-introduced open sexuality with the well-guided initial psychedelic experience. Both experiences often result in highly euphoric, life changing, long lasting insight.

To be sure, (imdb:) "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice", despite the wardrobe, was by no means a quaint relic of the swinging 60s/70s. Real life realizations of their, and our, entirely rational human impulses occur every day and night in every large city and small town around the world.

The Sexual Revolution, and the realities of polyamory, polyfidelity, the swinging lifestyle and safer sex practices remain alive and well in God-fearing America in the 21st Century.
